Audi has announced that its completed Auto Union Silver Arrow racer replica will make its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 11-13 July. At the helm will be Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who drove another Auto Union racer at last year's Festival of Speed.
The exact recreation of the Type D from 1938 has been painstakingly put together by British firm Crossthwaite and Gardener. It uses a 420bhp supercharged V12 engine and has a potential top speed of 200mph.
Mason said: "I must have done something right if Audi is prepared to let me take the wheel for this maiden trip. It's a huge honour, which I sincerely appreciate."
The Auto Union will be joined on the famous hillclimb course by the Audi A4 Super Touring car that won the 1996 British Touring Car Championship. At the wheel will be the man who drove the car to victory, Frank Biela. Alongside this will be the R10 TDI racer that has just won Le Mans with Brit Allan McNish as part of the winning driver line-up.
